4 ideas: life happens, honor freedom, loop till u know, size matters

November 21, 2025

Hey! It’s Janis.

My last newsletter was sent 127 days ago.

Why?

I also moved my newsletter from Kit to Substack and now back to Kit again. Curious why? Hit reply and let me know. With enough interest I might cover it in the next issue.

Freedom is one of my top desires.

The freedom to work on what I want, when I want, where I want, and with whom I want.

Obviously, this is closely tied to money – aka financial freedom.

And there are levels to it:

  • shifting from a hated 9-5 to a flexible one you enjoy
  • going self-employed with more control over your work
  • building enough leverage and savings to selectively choose projects
  • complete financial freedom where you're secured for life

Only recently did I learn how to honor this desire.

While I still believe that the fastest way there is earning more, it has made me much more intentional with where my money goes.

I think twice: "do I need it, or is it just a want I should set aside for now?"

Loop until you know.

How do you get clear on what you want?

The only thing that works for me is to try, iterate, learn, quit, and try some more.

The practice of elimination is how I figure things out.

Personal win.

Two days ago, I closed another book project with some kind words.

On this note…

Want to see how I land & illustrate book projects?

I'm hosting an event about it.

This event is exclusive to Explain Ideas Visually Course & Community members – join the program to attend

I'll take you behind the scenes and cover all the nuances of how I approach book projects: proposal, pricing, and process.

Size matters.

This week's visual tip is from Oregon City Brewing Co.

Use size and weight to guide the order in which your audience reads your visual.

That’s a wrap. 🌯

I'm glad to be back,
